Pennsylvania Station, often abbreviated to Penn Station, was a historic railroad station in New York City, named for the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR), its builder and original tenant. Not only is Moynihan Train Hall is a globally celebrated civic icon decades in the making, it is also exemplary of OHNY’s core values: promoting access and the power of place. The design, led by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, honors the historic Farley Building while creating a beautiful and uplifting 21st Century gateway for New Yorkers and visitors alike. The project, championed by the visionary Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan in the 1990s, expands the existing Penn Station with a 255,000-square-foot, modern rail hub inside the Beaux-Arts Farley Building. More than a century after the construction of the original Penn Station, and almost six decades after its demolition, the opening of the Train Hall in 2021 realized a long-held New York dream. Moynihan Train Hall is one of the most monumental civic projects undertaken in New York City in a generation. “Comprising a pair of footbridges-one lushly planted and the other featuring a dramatic mass-timber truss structure-that float above a tangle of busy roadways, the combined 600-foot-long pedestrian pathway fuses together various components of Manhattan’s Far West Side: the High Line, Hudson Yards, the mixed-use Manhattan West development, and, to the east, the new Moynihan Train Hall.”ĭesigned by SOM and James Corner Field Operations, the $50 million connector project is a public-private partnership owned by Empire State Development and maintained by the nonprofit Friends of the High Line.Join Host Committee About the Moynihan Train Hall Team “Now, one can walk from the High Line’s southern terminus over a mile away in the West Village to the intersection of 9th Avenue and 34th Street (a notoriously inhospitable pedestrian environment) without stepping foot on public pavement.”
